The people at the vineyard Usiglian Del Vescovo has made their first white wine, Il Ginestraio. They also make two red wines, a Chianti and a Tuscan IGT with 4 grapes: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Sangiovese. Remember also their spicy olive oil (about 3000 olive trees, Frantoio and Leccino).

Their soil is a mix of marine fossile and sandy loam. The vines are planted with about 5000 vines per ha.

You will find Usigliano on the Valdera Hills close to town of Palaia, between Pisa and Florens, close to San Miniato. Usiglian del Vescovo has 18 ha of vines, and 15 ha of olive trees. They have a wonderful castle from the 11th century. It's a quite fascinating castle with vast amount of vines, on sun-exposed hills (south, south-west). It's name comes from beeing of property of the bishop (vescovo) of Pisa.

I found this wine at the truffle fair in San Miniato at the end of November, a sunny brisk day, which made the wine having almost perfect serving temperature for us, at one of the squares in San Miniato.

The wine is limpid, light straw yellow and quite consistent, with fairly quick tears and medium sized legs. The balance between softness and roughness is excellent.

In the nose it's quite intense (quite perceivable scent), quite complex with medium range of odorous nuances, and olfactory quality is fine, due to elegant bouquet of fairly good intensity. I had impressions of flowers (white and yellow), fruits (lime, green and yellow apples, some pineapple), herbs (green grass) and tasty minerals ("salty stones", glycerine).

I felt it medium-dry, lightly to medium warm (inspite of its 14.5% alcohol, soft (due to good alcohol and glycerine content), quite fresh (caused some salivation), tasty (a clear and pleasant mineral taste), and full-bodied (good structure from perfectly ripe grapes).

It's balanced, quite intense, quite persistent, fine, ready to mature, and harmonius.

I would recommend it to salmon and pasta with truffle. To try something different, go for a yound pecorino cheese with this wine, you will be surprised!

Recommended serving temperature 8-10 degrees.
