San Jacopo di Vicchiomaggio, Chianti Classico
NOME VINO: San Jacopo di Vicchiomaggio, Chianti Classico 2012
PRODUTTORE: Castello Vicchiomaggio
ZONA: Toscana - Italia
VALUTAZIONE: @ @ @ @ @
As a cycling wine tour guide I sometimes has to do pretty good hills to get the good wines, and going to Castello Vicchiomaggio is no exception! The owners John and Paola Matta has definitely a room with a view with this beautifully situated vineyard!

The castle of Vicchiomaggio has it's origins in the 1400, and through the years always have had a strategic position, especially between all the wars between Florence and Siena.

The soil at Vicchiomaggio is very rich of clay, mixed with smaller and bigger stones, classic "Galestra".

Vicchiomaggio has done a Chianti Classico 2012 with the name San Jacopo that has loads of the classic tannins coming from the Sangiovese grapes. It's relative discrete in the nose, like many Chiantis are, and so much more rich on the palette. The Colorino grape gives the wine a little bit deeper red, and the Canaiolo gives it a little bit richer nose and more fruit.

The wine has been ageing in classic big oak barrels, to improve the wine, without giving it to much flavour of oak. The name San Jacopo come from a farm house on the properties of Vicchiomaggio.

The San Jacopo goes well to aged cheese, game, and to mention a local speciality, the Tuscan pork meat sausages called "Salsiccia".

It's a 2012, that you can have in your cellar for some more years to come.

It needs to be decanted, or opened the day before.

    Ciao Alessandro,

I admit the vintage of 2012 seems very young, and it has only spent time in big barrels, but to my surprise the wine developed a quite lot during the night, both in the nose and on the palette, more intense and rich in flavours. Maybe they have used extra long time for the fermentation?

    I think so. I can remember Matta prefers a good/long extraction/fermentation.
