I'm a big fan of Sangiovese, so the more the merrier usually. In this case with Marinai's blend of 90 % Sangiovese and 10 % Cabernet Sauvignon I find it elegant with a good spicy bite of anise and pepper at the end.
I shared a bottle with some of my neighbours and they remained with a big smile the whole afternoon! We hade pecorino, salami, salty snacks and dark chocolate at the end, a very memorable afternoon, not only for the taste buds.
If you ever have the chance to go and visit the winery just outside Panzano in Chianti you should really take it! The panorama from that place is breath taking out over the "Golden Valley" or Conca d'Oro as the Italian name is, referring to the old days when a lot of wheat were produced in the valley. Renzo Marinai is one of the few who still maintains the tradition of growing wheat in the "Golden Valley".
I still havn't had Renzo Marinai's last vintage of Riserva or Gran Selezione, but if they are even close to earlier vintages I would recommend to grab one or two of those as well. Maybe buy a case of each and enjoy one of them each year to see how they develop.
Their production of grapes are organic, so enjoy the pure flavours!
