The winery estate is based around 400 m above sea level, it has a gorgeous villa and a very beautiful view where you can see classic Chianti hills, castles and even the "skyline" of Gaiole! VerdiMonts total area of vines is about 23 hectares, mostly silty sand from lime stone rich in calcium. The density of vines is between 3000 and 3500 vines per hectar. The production is between 40 000 and 50 000 bottles of the Chianti Classico for VerdiMonti.
With the 5 different grapes this Chianti Classico gets quite complex both in the nose and on the palete. The wine spends about 30 months in oak barrels, so it gets pretty rounded with elegant tannins and brings a discrete spiciness of peppar, anice, mint, cloves and vanilla. The colour is beautiful limpid ruby red.
You will enjoy Verdimonti's Chianti Classico with salami, mortadella, prosciutto cotto/crudo, fresh or aged cheese like parmesan or pecorino stagionato, pasta with meat or mushrooms, or a main course with white or red meat. You could even try som heavier fish like salmon or tuna from the pan or the grill.
This Chianti Classico of VerdiMonti is a good experience to have now, or within the next 5-7 years I would say. If you are a keen fan of vintage cycling and will participate in the classic cycling event l'eroica the first Sunday in October, you can always swing up from Gaiole town to the Verdimonti winery. It's a hill to get there, but after doing the l'eroica you will have the practice for it! And once there you could also take the opportunity to try their Riserva as well, and their Rosè wine not to forget!
