I had the honour to meet the wine maker David Cianfanelli in person at the Chianti Classico Wine Festival in Greve now in September this year! If you never have been to this Chianti Classico Wine Festival in Greve I can recommend it, it's a fun crazy event where you will have the opportunity to meet the wine makers in person, at a very nice setting on the main sqaure Matteotti in Greve! Sig. Cianfanelli is a very ambitious wine maker who started the winery relatively late, in 2014. The production area is pretty small, about 2.5 ha of vines, together with 3.5 ha of olive trees. The soil for the vines has a lot of clay and marlstone, which is a calcium carbonate or lime-rich mud or mudstone. Podere Cianfanelli you will find in the north-east corner of the Chianti Classico area, just north of Strada in Chianti towards Impruneta.

Davids Chianti Classico from 2016 is 100 % Sangiovese, which gives the wine loads of tannins, but quite elegant tannins in this case. The flavours on your palate are a lot of cherry, blackberry, blueberry and black currant, mint, black pepper, followed by some dark chocolate and orange at the end. The wine spends 12-14 months in french oak barrels of 10 hl, so there is some vanilla flavours, but very discrete. This vintage 2016 was maybe slightly to young for me, it didn't felt fully developed yet, but it has potential. The 14 % of alcool you don't really feel. Actually, this wine disappeared way too fast!

My first recommandation is to try this lovely Chianti Classico with some pecorino-truffle cheese! Then you have the classical choices of pasta with a meat sauce, mushrooms or even vegetables and shredded parmesan on top of it. White or red meat. If you are a big fan the bread and vegetable soup called "ribollita" this Chianti Classico by Cianfanelli would be a good companion for the dinner.
