The vines for this wine grows on an altitude of 300-350 m above sea level, mostly marly limestone, relative close to the little town of San Donato in Poggio. The ageing of the wine has been made through 26 months in wood barrels with the size 25 hl (2 500 litres).
The Riserva is mostly ruby red with nuances of garnet red. The wine has a lot of fruit like dark cherry, plum, black berry, black currant and dried figs, spiced with some anis, peppermint and vanilla. The tannins are well balanced with strength and elegance.
This wine goes with most meat, from the grill or the oven, and why not even a classic Salami Toscano? Throw a salmon or a tuna fish in the pan and enjoy this wine, it's flexible enough. I would recommend you to share an improvised 'merenda' with some newly made Focaccia, and the day is yours! Some aged cheese like Grana Padano is a good treat with this Riserva.
Montecchio makes 7000 bottles of this Riserva, I would recommend to get a few and save for your friends during the next 10 years.
