met some wonderful expats who live in Rome, Victoria, Caitlin, Gerry Victoria's sister Magellan and 2 other girls who's names escape me, a Californian friend of theirs who's getting married in June and a really nice English young woman who works at FAO. We met at Finnegans an Irish pub in the quartiere Monti.

They were nice enough to invite me to have lunch with them in Trastevere at a historic Roman restaurant called "Ai Spaghettari". Thank you guys your kindness and generosity touched me :) xoxo

I had pasta con vongole veraci e aspargi. Pasta with clams and asparagus. It was cooked right, delicious. The clams were juicy, the asparagus creamy and really clung to the al dente spaghetti. The amazing thing about this restaurant was that everyone smiled, the waiters were quick, business like but kindly. The owners kept an eye on everything and everything went smoothly and efficiently. I was stunned. This wasn't the special treatment we were getting. I am pretty observant and everyone was treated this way. We also had artichokes, potatoes, my new found expat friends had lamb chops. The vegetable side dishes were delicious. We drank a wine called Incontro which I am going to look up. I reviewed it after tasting it, with my lovely Moleskin Wine Journal. But I wasn't able to determine what grapes it was made from. As I had eaten every meal out in my 3 days in Rome and some of my experiences were less than nice, the service mostly. Ai Spaghettari was a lovely surprise. Easter Sunday, while extraordinarily busy, everyone bus boys, waiters, waitresses, dining room managers and owners was curteous, hospitable, quick and kindly. The food was delicious too. And the price was decent. We ended up paying 43 euros per person and we had eaten a lot and drank quite a few bottles of wine. The restaurant is located in Trastevere the in a lovely large square called Cosimato, I loved everything and will definately return. They're open all day long, so one can go for a late lunch or an early dinner. Wonderfully convenient. I wasn't compensated in any way to rave about this place. It's geniune appreciation for value and high quailty. Dear all at Ai Spaghettari -thank you for making up for all the rude restauranteurs who mistreat visitors and for a pleasant Easter Sunday Lunch, you'll be remembered with fondness. Until we meet again! ;)

    My blog my opionions :)

    @Andrea Petrini this being said:
I am totally open to suggestions as to where I should eat the next time I am in Rome for 4 days.
    Where oh where :)
    My priorities are the following:
    good manners, kindness and hospitality
    decent food,
    decent wine list.
I was subjected to really atrocious behaviour in Rome, I've never seen so many rude, illmannered and inhospitable people in the hospitality business ever...ever! This actually is a problem in Italy. With social media, the fact that everyone publishes their opinions businesses should be more careful how they treat their guests...right? You think? Well not my friend. We were really shocked. Myself and my 3 friends from the Baltimore/Annapolis area that I was showing around. So when we got to Ai Spaghettari, they smiled, they were accomodating, quick to comply with our requests. Approachable, their food was tasty...they were so nice that we didn't want to leave...it was that bad Easter w/end in Rome. :)
So that should inpart assuage your marvel at my high scores..these folks were uber nice and we were starved for some niceness at that point.

    Ok, that's ok for service.
But, what about 9 for food?
I mean, 9 seems to be a very high value for a "decent" or "tasty" food. What I think Andrea was trying to ask you was to have a little bit objectiveness assigning votes. Anyway, any review is welcome and I always give a lot more value to the words than to the votes.

    Cheers, Fil.

SCusa Dea non metto in dubbio la bontà della tua esperienza, solo che non è la prima volta che leggo punteggi mirabolanti a carte dei vini "normali".
La mia domande è: se vai da Pinchiorri quanto metti di punteggio alla loro carta?

@Fil @Andrea maybe it's just ok to you, I said decent and tasty (which for me is a compliment tasty is a compliment for me...get it?)
I am foreign, I don't travel that much in Italy, so why pooh pooh my opinion.
Frankly I get a bit wearied at times listening to folks who have slightly rigid attitudes about wine. I am a consumer I write for consumers and this is what I think. I feel maybe that you guys are pushing me a tiny bit into a corner.
We need to decomplexify food and wine and make it approachable to everyone. My fans, my readers like what I say. It's that simple.
Also I am not a fan of Enoteca Pinchiorri for whatever that's worth. My specialty is simple trattorias that give high added value for the prices they charge. This is my niche. :)

Sorry for sounding a bit edgy guys, it's just that I get "attacked" often by ppl who feel that only "certain people" should be able to write about food and wine. I think that there is room for everyone.
Everyone can say what they want, and you will never find me objecting to what someone else subjectively thinks.
That being said you are welcome to object and say your 2 cents too. I need or feel the need to make food and wine more approachable, lighter, fun. I think that this push for internationalizing all these amazing products you have here in Italy marries well with all voices speaking and sharing about all the wonders your wonderful country has. All voices means simple housewives like me too :)

@Andrea Perini, never said you attacked me I said I have been attacked in the past by "Ayattollahs" of wine or food because they believe that their opinion is what counts.
You are right the wine list is less subjective but that too depends.
Also I didn't mind your comments. We are different in my culture we are taught if you have nothing nice to say say nothing. This isn't necessarily true in other cultures ...anyway it's all cool...right? :)
My idea of a well put together wine list is that the local territory is well represented. That there are good price points and enough variety and that close by regions are represented too. So I don't look for big names, important labels all of that. Price, value, local representation is what I judge by. We have different criteria I guess but I'd love to find out about yours? What constitutes a good wine list for you? I'm curious :) peace ok ;) oh and btw I love comments prefer nice ones obviousely but all comments are welcome for sure :)

I was given one. An extensive one where Lazio, Umbria, Campania were well represented and there was a small collection of tuscan, venetian wines. All basic budget wines but there is room for this too. Enough already guys. :)
